Welcome to the Interactive Cryptography Museum

Cryptography is older than you think. Before computers, before electricity, before the printing press, human beings were already finding ways to hide messages from everyone except their intended reader. The earliest known cipher dates to around 1500 BCE, when a Mesopotamian scribe encoded a recipe for pottery glaze using unusual cuneiform signs. Since then, every era of history has produced its own cryptographic artifacts — Spartan skytales, Roman substitution alphabets, Renaissance codebooks, Vigenère squares, mechanical cipher machines, and ultimately the digital encryption that protects your data today.

DecodeCipher is a digital museum built around these artifacts. It is not a cryptography textbook, and it is not a collection of puzzle games. It is an interactive exhibition hall where you can see encryption happening, manipulate the parameters, observe how small changes produce dramatically different outputs, and discover why systems that once seemed unbreakable eventually fell to determined analysis. Every exhibit runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, no account to create, and no data ever leaves your session.

The museum is organized into five permanent collections. The Classical Cipher Collection traces the arc from Caesar's shift cipher through the Vigenère square, the Rail Fence transposition, monoalphabetic substitution, the Atbash cipher, and the Playfair digraph system — covering more than two thousand years of manual encryption techniques. The Historical Machines Collection surveys mechanical and electromechanical cipher devices including the Spartan skytale, the Jefferson Wheel, the M-94 strip cipher, the Enigma series, the Lorenz SZ40/42, SIGABA, the Japanese Purple Machine, and the Hagelin rotor family. These machines represent encryption as engineering — physical constraints, manufacturing tolerances, and operator procedures become part of the cryptographic equation.

The Cryptanalysis Collection explores the other side of the contest: the tools and methods used to break ciphertext. Frequency analysis, index of coincidence, Kasiski examination, n-gram scoring, hill climbing, and known-plaintext attacks are presented as interactive experiments rather than abstract formulas. The Famous Messages Collection examines real cryptograms that changed history — the Zimmermann Telegram, the Babington cipher that convicted Mary Queen of Scots, Enigma naval traffic, Venona project intercepts, and Caesar's own dispatches. Each message is presented in its historical context with the cryptographic techniques that eventually revealed its content. The Cryptography Timeline connects everything across four millennia, showing how cipher design and cryptanalysis co-evolved in a continuous cycle of invention and response.

What makes this museum unique is that nothing is locked behind glass. You do not read about the Vigenère cipher — you type a message, choose a key, and watch the transformation letter by letter. You do not study a diagram of the Enigma — you turn rotors, wire a plugboard, press keys, and trace the electrical signal through the machine. You do not memorize frequency tables — you load ciphertext into the analysis lab and see the histogram diverge from expected English distribution in real time. This approach trades passive explanation for active exploration. The exhibits are designed so that intuition forms through direct manipulation rather than through pages of textual exposition.
